What is Non-canonical Literature?
Non-canonical literature that is not deemed “classical.” In other words, these are not go-to novels that have been taught in English/Language Arts classes for generations. Noncanonical literature can be comprised of many different genres, for instance: graphic novels, realistic fiction, dystopian fiction, manga, or science fiction/fantasy.
We chose to explore this genre because we’re interested in the wide range of literature that tends to be neglected in the classroom. We believe that there is merit in exposing students to a broader range of material. There are many different facets that compose literature and teachers shouldn’t limit themselves to a singular genre without knowing what constitues the others.
